GKN Lab has been shortlisted in THE Awards MENA. This year’s winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 14 November 2023, concluding day two of the THE MENA Universities Summit during which we will celebrate the very best in the region’s higher education.

The Qatar University (QU) team were extensively involved in the SARS-CoV-2 studies, generating valuable data by a broad assessment of vaccine effectiveness, which was important to the community given the uncertainties over efficacy and safety. The analysis of over 7,000 blood samples found that Moderna generates a higher level of antibodies than Pfizer, and a heterologous vaccination triggers immune responses equivalent to homologous Pfizer and Moderna vaccination regimens.

Furthermore, a collaboration between the QU team and the University of Rome-Italy evaluated the aforementioned vaccines, which led to the creation of a novel and accurate detection method for SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses in collaboration with the University of Texas-USA. The availability of highly-trained graduate students at QU led to collaboration with many institutes, resulting in an exceptional number of publications. The QU team established themselves as leaders in COVID-19 research, and their efforts greatly contributed to the fight against the pandemic.
